The "Conscious Movement" classes have grown out of my own yoga studies and practice which have been on-going for 35 years.  Through these many years I've maintained a daily practice, studied Tai-Chi, and taken classes and workshops with countless teachers of diverse movement, meditation, and yoga traditions.  All have influenced my practice and enriched my understanding of the simple truth of  "Conscious Movement"  ... it is a wonderful path toward quieting and focusing the mind; it allows us to become deeply aware of our bodies and to strengthen muscles, bones and organs; and it provides a sacred space that supports and allows communion with one's own deepest being and Spirit.

This perception of the benefits of yoga poses and breathwork for the human body is uniquely enhanced by my understanding of anatomy, physiology and my education and current practice as a licensed massage therapist.  Every class is different and tailored toward those present and the moment itself, but all begin with quiet sitting, turning attention toward breath and letting go of the day's activities, self-definitions and busyness...returning to that simple awareness of one's essence and one's basic goodness.  From this space we begin guided movement led by breath and we slowly move through a series of poses, all the while conscious of our posture, our muscles and bones, the distribution of weight on our joints, the length of our spine...thus developing a habit of body awareness and deep listening while building core strength.

We complete the class lying on our backs in total relaxation ... sometimes with a guided meditation and sometime in simple, quiet inner communion.  Currently, I'm offering two classes each week.

MONDAYS, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. in my studio.  Here we have a 90-minute "Conscious Movement" class ending with tea and time for joyful sharing in circle with one another.  After serving tea we read a short passage from a chosen book of wisdom which often provides us philosophic food for thought and elicits lively conversation. Cost is $15. per class.  Please bring your own yoga mat.

THURSDAYS, 6:30 - 7:45 p.m. in the lovely foyer of the Spirit of the Hills Lutheran Church at the intersection of Bee Creek Road and R.O. Drive.  This class is 70 minutes of "Conscious Movement" ending with 5 minutes of quiet relaxation.  It is best if you can arrive around 6:15 to get settled and begin quietly breathing and sitting.  The cost is $12. per class.  If you are a member of the church your first class is free of charge.

Wear clothing that allows freedom of movement --- it is helpful if it is form-fitting so that I can see your body and make suggestions for subtle improvements in your poses.  In the beginning, you may simply bring a blanket to lie on and a pillow to sit on, but should you choose to continue the class, you will want a good yoga mat and either a cushion or a rolled-up blanket to sit upon.

Comments from members of  "Conscious Movement" classes:

"Barbara's Conscious Movement class is a unique experience with tranquil surroundings, small intimate classes and Barbara's gentle voice guiding us through a moving meditation of body, mind and spirit. Combining breathwork, Tai-chi, yoga and free-form movement has increased my strength and flexibility while reducing stress. I truly love her classes and really look forward to them."

"Barbara'a classes are wonderful!  I am so glad Barbara is sharing her knowledge and helping each of us to be aware of our "total body". Each class is different and she always seems to have a sense of what our bodies need that day.  Warm and welcoming environment."
